Objective: The aim of the study is to assess the effect of 1-year treatment with tibolone on bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
Methods: Sixty-two postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis were enrolled to a prospective study of treatment with 2.5 mg per day of tibolone for a year. BMD of lumbar spine (L2-L4) was assessed by dual energy
absortiometry at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months after treatment. Serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and
estradiol (E2) level were also assessed at baseline and 12 months after treatment.
Results: BMD at the studied site after 12 months of tibolone (0.82 ¡¾ 0.10 g/cm2) was significantly higher as compared to baseline (0.77 ¡¾ 0.10 g/cm2). The gain of BMD was +5.1%. Serum FSH and E2 values remained relatively stable as compared to baseline.
Conclusion: This study suggests that tibolone treatment in postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoposis is effective in terms of improving BMD.
